GeneBEcon: Capturing the potential of Gene editing for a sustainable Bio Economy
The Chair of Food Law at the University of Bayreuth is part of the Horizon Europe project GeneBEcon, which explores the potential of New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) for sustainable agriculture and biotechnology.
Using potatoes and microalgae as case studies, the project examines how NGTs can reduce inputs, increase efficiency, and support a circular bioeconomy. Alongside technical research, GeneBEcon also addresses regulatory frameworks, economic impacts, and public perception.
With partners including the Swedish Agricultural University, the University of Latvia, Wageningen University, INRAE and DTI, GeneBEcon provides guidance for the safe and responsible use of NGTs—helping Europe unlock their full innovation potential.
